The LE #675: About Our Covers

"The Christ of the Narrow Way"

"In September 1989, the Ellen G. White Estate commissioned Elfred Lee, a well-known Seventh-day Adventist artist, to paint a 30x8 foot mural (9.1x2.4 meters) based on Ellen White's first vision. The mural, which was unveiled on October 22, 1991, now covers the entire west wall of the Estate's reception area in the headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. So far as is known, the mural, which was sponsored by the friends of the White Estate, is the largest painting of its kind in the Adventist world. (Note: We could wish for the entire mural to be shown here, but it is too large to include its entirety and yet retain the visual detail. Our cover pages reflect two impressive scenes from two of the panels.)

"In the center of the mural is a larger-than-life representation of Jesus with arms extended, and in the foreground is a narrow, rocky path leading to the Holy City. On this path a long line of people representing numerous national, racial, and ethnic groups, is pressing forward toward the city. In the background behind the inspiring view of Jesus watching over His people and encouraging them on their spiritual pilgrimage, are pictured personalities, events, and institutions that are unique to the Advent movement.

"By placing Christ in the center of the mural (as pictured above), the artist has emphasized the truth that Christ the living Word, is the sole means of salvation. He is the center of Adventist thought, the source of, and authority for, every doctrine held by the church. Christ is not only the Lord and Leader of His people, but with outstretched hands He invites all to receive His righteousness and accept His Lordship." (information supplied by he White Estate)

Editor's note: Of her first vision, Ellen White wrote of those seen on the narrow pathway: "If they kept their eyes fixed on Jesus, who was shown before them, leading them to the city, they were safe. But soon some grew weary, and said the city was a great way off, and they expected to have entered it before. Then Jesus would encourage them by raising His glorious right arm. Others rashly denied the light behind them, and they stumbled and fell off the path into the dark and wicked world below."

Literature Evangelists will at times be similarly tested; and becoming weary in well doing, some will then be tempted to lay aside their calling to service - but praise God, we need not despair! Salvation is our through Jesus Christ, and His grace is sufficient for every trial.

If you visit the world headquart3rs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, you will be cordially welcomed to visit The White Estate. It is the safeguarded repository of Ellen G. White's inspired writings. A monument to her life and ministry, it is a place of quiet reverence that serves as a research facility for students and biblical scholars. Come and stand in awe before this matchless mural. It evokes the entire story of redemption and highlights the all-encompassing gospel of Christ as it encircles the world to embrace all mankind.
